When you click a retractable ballpoint pen closed what keeps the ink from drying up w/ the tip still exposed?
Being as there is still a hole at the tip and the ballpoint is still exposed (though shrouded) it seems it would dry up quite quickly.
The 'ball' on a ballpoint pen fits tightly into a socket, and the ink reservoir is on the side of the ball opposite to the exposed side. So most of the ink is not exposed directly to air. Also, unlike fountain pen ink, ballpoint pen ink is primarily oil-based, so it doesn't dry out that easily anyway.
The primary reasons for retracting or capping a ballpoint pen are to keep the residual ink from getting on things (like you or your clothes), and to reduce the amount of dust that the tip collects.
