I'm trying to find out about the artist Kulcher and his bronze figurines. Can anyone help?
Sorry, I got the name slightly wrong. It should say Küchler.
He is Rudolph Kuchler born an Austrian in 1867. Austria has been a centre for small bronze figures and over the last couple of years they have been very popular in the English auction houses. Many of the Austrian bronzes are very small but one about a foot high by this Rudolph Kuchler would be worth upwards of £1000 or so. Some pieces are marked RK Berlin - these are by the same man.
Well, one sculpture is available on Ebay.
Otherwise, there wasn't too much. I've heard of him only because I had a German grand-parent with an interest in sculpture.
Basically he seems to have been a Prussian German/Austrian) Sculptor of possibly the late 19th and early 20th century and appears to have made several classically styled art-deco pieces. Considering his German heritage and the timeframe during which he was likely to have been most productive in his career, we can make a couple of specualtions but they are just that and may not be very accurate.
There are a couple of possibilities, given the distinct lack of the usual google/wikipedia entries.
1. It's possible that modern references just might have escaped him, like many talented artists of history.
2. Since there was a known affinity for these types of pieces the German NAZI regime in the 1930's. It's possible that one of two conditions existed, he either "fell in" with the wrong crowd - historically speaking and is today considered taboo in some way.
3. That while his artwork was considered acceptable, he was not and he may have been purged by the regime or had the majority of his works confiscated or otherwise hidden.
In any event, since alot of artwork was being aquired/collected by the Germans of that timeframe through questionable / military means, that may have been the fate of his works.
I may also be wrong and didn't find anything because I might not have looked hard enough or speak German to any great effect.
